Bourbon and rye are distinctly different whiskies but for the sake of simplifying your initial bar setup I’m suggesting one or the other. Purists may disagree but they can work interchangeably in many drinks if you only have one or the other on hand. Bourbon is made from corn and is sweeter and has many familiar brands like Maker’s Mark and Jack Daniels. Rye is made from rye grain and tends to have a bit of a spicy taste.
There are a huge variety of bourbons and ryes on the market with a wide range of price points. Get some decent stock varieties like Maker’s or Bulleit for making cocktails and enjoy exploring more expensive bottles to drink neat or with a little ice. And perhaps a cigar!
