ORANGE LIQUEUR

A lot of drinks call for some form of an orange liqueur and there are a lot of them to choose from, so I kept this core bottle generic for bar setup.  The flavors and quality (and price) can vary quite a lot and how much you’ll taste the difference will depend on the drink you’re mixing.  You can often just substitute with triple sec in a pinch, though in a slightly smaller pour, like using 1/2 oz instead of 3/4 oz in a recipe.

Triple sec is probably the easiest bottle to initially stock your bar with.  It will work fine in drinks like margaritas and can also be used in Tiki drinks but not as well in more “booze-forward” drinks.  There are some orange liqueurs that blend cognac with orange, like Grand Marnier, and these will have a distinctly different flavor that will work better with some drinks than others.  The good news with orange liqueurs is that most drinks don’t require more than 1/2 to 3/4 oz at a time, so a bottle can last a while.  I suggest keeping a staple like Triple Sec on hand at all times and then adding other more expensive bottles to sample and use more sparingly.
