CALVADOS
Calvados is a brandy made with apples, or in some cases pears. To be called “Calvados”, it needs to come from the Normandy region of France. Several varieties of apples may be used in producing Calvados. The fruit is first made into a dry cider and then distilled. After aging for two years in oak casks, it can be bottled and sold as Calvados.
I wanted to feature Calvados for its apple flavor, since it’s autumn and I’m in the mood for some autumnal libations! Applejack is another option, which I also enjoy. Applejack tends to be a bit sweeter compared to Calvados but it also depends on the brand of Calvados you purchase. The apple flavor is more pronounced in some. My go-to lately has been the one that Trader Joe’s features. (see photo). It’s smooth, has plenty of apple flavor shining through, and is relatively easy on the wallet at around $20. Grab a bottle and enjoy some of the cocktails below as you warm up with the cooler weather.
